Aarni was born and raised in the Pacific, she is an Advisor with the Pacific Community’s Human Rights Social Development Division (HRSD). Aarni holds a Masters degree in Law with Honours from the University of Auckland, and a Bachelor in Arts degree specializing in Film, Television and Media Studies.
Aarni was admitted to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, in 2010. She has over 8 years’ experience as a practicing lawyer, prior to joining HRSD in 2018 she was a Barrister in City Chambers, Auckland where she worked alongside Queens Counsel. She later joined the Public Defence Service in New Zealand where she was involved in a range of criminal work which saw her appear regularly in the District and High Court in New Zealand.
Aarni is passionate about human rights education and ensuring that marginalized groups have access to justice, she has done notable work in this area particularly in the Solomon Islands and Tonga. Aarni is also responsible for leading HRSD’s work with justice service providers and currently holds the portfolio for disability rights.
